An office-based review of the site’s topography, mapped geology, and geotechnical conditions
As a review of the project site, the Phase 1 Desk Study collates and reviews available information about the site and its immediate surroundings. Also referred to as the Phase 1 Assessment or the Preliminary Risk Assessment, this study covers more detail than the Initial Site Appraisal.
The study will identify geological strata in the region and predict what is likely to be found on-site and in the ground, yielding a thorough approach to Ground / Site Investigation.
A thorough review of historical maps may provide insight into previous land uses, potential remnants, and can potentially outline information concerning hydrogeology, mining activities, pollution incidents, and the potential for Unexploded Ordnances.
Combined with a Site Walkover survey, the Phase 1 Desk Study enables deeper insight into the appropriate strategies for risk mitigation, determining suitable techniques for the Ground / Site Investigation, and gaining site access.
Preliminary Geotechnical Assessment
The study includes a high-level preliminary geotechnical assessment of settlement, slope stability, bearing capacity, excavation and swelling issues, as well as suggestions on suitable foundation types, groundwater problems, and whether there is likely to be contamination on-site.
The Phase 1 Desk Study offers a site-specific, conceptual geotechnical model with informed recommendations for the Ground / Site Investigation.
Importance of the Phase 1 Desk Study
Above all, the study instils confidence when applying for funding and is, in most cases, a prerequisite for such approvals from the local authorities.
