Soil and Land Capability Assessments

Soil is one of the resources most often disturbed, polluted or mismanaged if proper planning and assessment is not included in development projects. To assist with the project assessment, J&W can provide soil assessment services inclusive of data collection and mapping that allows for the classification of the soil in terms of the relevant classification system as required (international such as FAO/USDA/WRB or country specific such as the BSCS/ALC). The data is then analysed to determine the capability of that soil to support different land uses, with the focus often being on the balance of food production on agricultural land vs developmental needs. In the mining context this information is also used to advise on stripping plans pre-mining, and rehabilitation and amelioration post-mining.
